Johannesburg Style - Architecture & Society 1880s - 1960s - Clive M. Chipkin - David Philip, Cape Town - 1993, first edition - 335pp, index, numerous black & white and colour photographs.

Hardcover and dustcover in excellent, clean condition. Some minor shelf wear and a small bump or two on the outer edges, otherwise virtually As New and unread.

This review is from:Johannesburg Style: Architecture and Society 1880s-1960s (Hardcover)

Clive Chipkin does not simply succeed in furnishing a fascinating and passionate history of South African architecture, his masterly work, amongst other things, reveals the ambivalence of the modern movement when deployed in a colonial context. This is one of the most important texts to have appeared in the last few years.

A must have for anyone interested in Architecture and Design or in Johannesburg's evolution from mining shanty town to Metropolis.
