John o' the Green, by Jeffery Farnol.
King Tristan sets out to unite the neighboring kingdoms and duchies, under his rulership of course. The local kings and rulers are unwilling and the king's plan seems likely to fail. That is, until John o' the Green, a noble and an outlaw, is captured by the king's men. For the sake of his nine captured comrades John agrees to his captors' proposal, and with chain mail under his innocent minstrel's costume he sets out for a neighboring duchy in the hope of winning it by cunning or by courage. Little does he suspect that within its high-walled, many-towered city he would find it ruled by a girl whose courage commands his respect and whose youth and loveliness wins his love.
