Shakespeare has probably inspired more composers than any other poet and this collection of four essays by eminent musicologists shows how great and enduring was his influence in many usical fields. John Stevens deals with the contemporary composers, up to 1660; Charles Cudworth carries the history of the song-writers up to modern times: Winton Dean surveys the unexpectedly large number of operas based on Shakespear's plays: and finally Roger Fiske deals mainly with the music written for the concert-hall. A comprehensive catalogue groups the music under plays, with a cross-index from the composers. This is the joint work of Miss Dorothy Moore, Honorary Librarian of Society of Theatre Research, and of the editor, who has also provided a short introduction and an index.
