Competitions

Rugby Challenge has the licence to every player name and likeness in the Tri-Nations, Quad-Nations, Aviva Premiership, Bledisloe Cup, Top 14 Orange, RaboDirect PRO12, ITM Cup and Ranfury Shield, as well as the all important licences for the All Blacks, the Wallabies and all the Rugby World Cup stadiums.

They don¿¿t have the licence to the Rugby World Cup, Six Nations or Super Rugby Competitions.¿¿ These are all still in the game in some form but, unfortunately, the names of the competitions are different, the players are fake, and not all the kits are the official ones (only the teams they have licences for at international level). [NB This is a correction to the original review after we were given some misinformation, the developers have cleared up the confusion]

Training

There are basic, intermediate, advanced and professional tutorials. Each of the videos takes you through a differing degree of the rules, to ensure that you know what you are doing and for the most advanced players, it teaches you things you need to know to win in the highest difficulty setting.

The amazing thing about the training feature is that you get the opportunity to practice while the game is loading. You can skip the screen as soon as the game has loaded or you can practice any aspect of the game for as long as you need. A great little feature.

Career mode

This is where things really get exciting. You can create a player and put him in any team in any competition in world rugby and play a 13 year career mode with that team. You can choose just to play club rugby, just to play international rugby or you can play seasons that include both. Your player visibly ages as the seasons go by and a season includes every competition that exists in real life. It¿¿s quite astonishing. You can also transfer your player between clubs at the end of a season. In addition, if you take control of a team in career mode, you can also transfer players from other teams into your team between seasons. [NB This is a correction to the original review as we were originally told that this was not possible]

Customisation

Remember when we said that career mode is where things get exciting?

This is where Rugby Challenge will blow your mind!

The attention to detail and customisable options is staggering. If you can conceive it, you can probably customise it in the game.

Every player is fully customisable. If a player gets a haircut in real life and you want him to look exactly the same in the game, it¿¿s quite simple to do. You can edit the boot colour of your player so that he wears different colours for club and country. You can fully edit the stats of every player and, unlike in FIFA, rather than having to increase stats by one point per click, 5 button taps takes you from 0-100 in an instant. The possibilities for player customisation are literally endless.

Teams are also fully customisable. Not only can you enter your team into any competition in world rugby, including pitting your favourite club side against the teams in the Six Nations, but you can also customise their tactics. You are given what seems like an endless list of scenarios and asked to toggle your team¿¿s reactions in certain situations, and then your team¿¿s tactics adjust accordingly. It¿¿s really quite the masterstroke and gives you endless varieties of game plans you can run.

Each competition is also fully customisable. You can create your own competition, name it what you like and assign it any cup you like. You can pit Super Rugby teams against Premiership teams, international sides or any combination you like. This feature should keep gamers busy long after the Rugby World Cup is over.
