Title    Jong doktor Serfontein
Author    Theunis Krogh [pseud]
Publisher    JL Van Schaik Beperk, 1973
Length    156 pages

About the Author:
Stella Blakemore [aka Theunis Krogh]
Stella Blakemore was born near Lindley in the Free State on April 13 1906. Her mother, Emma, was a music teacher; an Afrikaans girl who married an officer in the British army, Captain Percy Blakemore. She spent her school years in hostels in Natal. She subsequently obtained a piano and singing licenciate at the London Royal Academy of Music. She studied opera in Italy and Germany and around the Second World War she ran her own successful music school, the Blakemore Studios, in Pretoria. She married the Welshman David Owen in 1933. They moved around quite a bit, living in many countries including Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Italy, England, Swaziland, Nigeria, Germany and Ireland. Stella Blakemore died in Northern Ireland in May 1991 at the age of 85.
Stella started writing in Germany in the 1920s and her first work was a play, Die goue sleutel. Die meisies van Maasdorp was first published in 1932. 15 more titles were to follow in the Maasdorp series, which comprised 12 books in later editions. In 1940 the first of twenty books in the Keurboslaan series was published. She used the name of her grandfather, Theunis Krogh, as pseudonym. Stella also wrote books using pseudonyms such as Annelise Bierman, Stella Owen and Dien Grimbeek.
Stella Blakemore is one of the most popular writers of youth fiction in Afrikaans. Her Maasdorp and Keurboslaan series made an important contribution to the Afrikaans literature and managed to get many young people hooked on reading.
