Offered for sale is an attractive Joy China ceramic vase made in Boksburg in the East Rand of Johannesburg and dating to between 1945-1958. Joy China was a subsidiary of BEP Boksburg East Pottery which also owned and managed the better known Lucia pottery manufactory . This vase has an elegant art deco inspired trumpet shape with twisted rope or cord like edging on the side of the vase and an oval base with a ridged or stepped pedestal base. The aperture of the vase has an undulating scalloped profile. The vase is glazed in a mottled powder blue colour. The base is marked with the manufacturers name Joy China and a form or shape number. A vase of the same shape but in a dark green glaze is illustrated in Wendy Gers seminal book Scorched Earth 100 Years of Southern African Potteries. That example is housed in the Tatham Art gallery in Pietermaritzburg Natal which has a representative collection of commercial and studio pottery from South Africa.
