After leaving viewers shocked and salivating for more the previous season, creator and co-executive producer Marc Cherry was determined to shake things up for the third season. And boy, did he, with Desperate Housewives: The Complete Third Season: The Dirty Laundry Edition, now available on DVD.
The season picks up right where it left off, with Bree Van de Kamp (Marcia Cross) marrying the enigmatic Orson Hodge (Kyle Maclaclan), who had mysteriously ran over Susan Mayer’s (Teri Hatcher) fiancee Mike Delfino (James Denton). The five women, which also include Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman), Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria), and Edie Britt (Nicolette Sheridan), are deeply suspicious of Orson.
Rumors about him swirl around Wisteria Lane that he cheated on his supposedly dead wife Alma and committed the murder of a woman thought to have been done by Mike. The mysterious past of Orson only increasingly reveals itself as both his mother Gloria (Dixie Carter) and Alma (Valerie Mahaffey) make their way into the block.
Meanwhile, the quintet continue to also deal with their own problems. After finding out that her husband Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chivalra) is having an affair with their maid and surrogate mother Xiao-Mei (Gwendolyne Yao), she seeks a divorce from Carlos, resulting in a continual back and forth between the two soon-to-be-exes, and ends up marrying eccentric mayoral candidate Victor Lang (John Slattery).
After Mike emerges from his Coma, Edie uses his amnesiac state to sabotage her relationship with Susan, who in the interim falls in love with Englishman Ian Hainsworth (Dougray Scott), who’s wife is in a coma. Lynette finds herself growing distant from her husband Tom (Doug Savant), when his daughter Kayla Huntington (Rachel Fox) from a one-night stand prior to their marriage shows up with her mother Nora (Kiersten Warren).
When Nora gets killed, Tom and Lynette raise Kayla as her own and despite the latter’s attempt to bond with her, their new charge soon causes havoc for them. And when she quits her job to help her now-unemployed husband open a pizzeria together, she finds herself wandering into the arms of its assistant manager Rick Coletti (Jason Gedrick).
While last season proved to be a bit of a letdown in comparison to its earth-shattering first, the third season of Desperate Housewives takes the show’s mix of scandalous comedy and drama to new heights. Despite a feeling of the story often reaching the breaking points of over-the-top with its central plot around Kyle Maclachlan’s almost charmingly duplicitous Orson character, three weddings, and more murders than ever before, Marc Cherry and his writers this time out thankfully seem back on track and more focused.
