What does Diffusion mean?Diffused stones are natural earth-mined gemstones (usually corundum based) that are heated in the presence of certain elements that enhance the colour of the gem and improve the clarity of the gem - sometimes up to IF levels.
Is this still a natural gem?Yes, this is still a natural gemstone (corundum) - it has just been treated to improve it's overall quality.
How come a laboratory certificate could state that it is synthetic?According to international standards, diffusion is a commonly accepted practice on corundum based gems (ruby, sapphire, etc) and thus they state that the gemstone is still natural. However, in SA, due to the treatments done on the gemstone, it is classified as synthetic. (NOTE: it is not glass, or man-made - it is a treated natural gemstone)
