Fire Opal was revered by the Ancient Peoples of South America as symbols of fervent love and their warm firey glow speaks of vigour and life. The Mayas and Aztecs loved Fire Opal and used it in Mozaics and for ritualistic purposes. Today, Fire Opal is the national stone of Mexico.
As you can see by the pictures above, not all Fire Opals are the same! Play of colour, body colour and transparency are the 3 criterea that determine the quality of Fire Opal. The more transparency and "fire" it has, and the more intense the colour is, the more valuable it will be. Fire Opals like the pear shaped one above are called "sleepy" and there is much of this on the market. The gem on auction is "Fervantly on Fire" and is much less common and more valuable!
This Fire Opal is classed as Flawless with is no damage such as chips or abrasion to any of the facets. It is master cut and polished with AAA+++colour and fire.
Fire opal has a hardness of 6 and if you are intending to make a piece of Jewelry out of this gem, it should be in a protected setting.
