There is now a "family" of differant azotic coatings being applied to both quartz and topaz. (Quartz has a hardness of 7 and Topaz a hardness of 7.5) The process which produces this effect is a protected patent and remains a closely guarded secret. Each of the types of azotic coating have a unique and fascinating beauty of their own. This coating is called "English Blue azotic" and looks just like quality Royal Blue Sapphire.
If you have never experienced Azotic coated gems before, once you hold one in your hands you will be a convert! The colours "come alive" and dance all over the gem. The magical effect is spectacular. These gems are created for being worn!
One amazing thing about azotic coated gems is that the pavilion (the back facets) usually have a sheen quite unlike the table (the front/top face) - Looking from the table top of the gem - you can see the spectacular bursts of colour right into and through the gem - truely fascinating and awesome!
The process involves heat and pressure so the coating is ¿baked¿ from 1 ¿ 2mm into the surface of the gem. With normal wear the coating will not rub off.
