Demantoid Garnet is classed as rare in gemmological tables and commands high prices.
Garnet has been known since ancient times, but demantoid was only discovered in Russia in 1853. Possessing an unusual green color and a dispersion greater than that of diamond, it quickly became a treasured and expensive gemstone. Its dispersion (0.057) is one of the highest of all gemstones, and this is visible in demantoid's intense fire.
Demantoid by definition is always green, ranging from a very light yellowish green to nearly emerald green. Many stones have a brownish cast and much of the rough material is included. Stones with more intense green coloration are more highly valued, but lighter stones display substantially more fire. The choice of stone color or fire can therefore be a matter of personal preference, with some preferring the less valuable but more lively yellowish-green stones.
Under 10 x magnification the gem is well cut and polished. It is classed as SI2. You will see some inclusions with the naked eye but they are not significantly distracting. Under a 10 x loupe these inclusions are prominent. The colour is a slightly deeper green than capyured in the photo. The gem comes with an international lab certificate as pictured. Demantoid garnnet would fit into either category 1 or 2 of the GIA clarity classification where they are normally included. You can read more about this at http://www.khazargems.com/purchasing2.asp
Gemval.com classifies Demanoid as rare and puts the value of this gem at $417. Retail is usually around 40% more. An international gem lab report would cost about R300 to R500. You have to be a paid up member to get damantoid values. If you are and you want to check, use colour #086 - medium green.
