Colour Change Diaspore is a Rare collectors gem

Beautiful, durable, exotic and rare, Diaspore is a color change gemstone and a rising star in fine jewelry. Its gemological name “Diaspore” comes from the Greek word “diaspora” meaning “to scatter.

Coming in a range of earthy colors, similar to Alexandrite, Diaspore can change from a kiwi green to a raspberry purplish-pink, depending on the light source. Diaspore’s kiwi greens are noticeable under sunny skies (candescent light – note that most gems do not diplay their best colours under direct sunlight!!), while traditional indoor lighting will elicit rich champagne colors. During a candle lit dinner (incandescent light), the same gem reveals pink to raspberry hues. These darker red colors are caused by higher manganese content.

Diaspore (also known by the name Zultanite in honor of the 36 sultans who founded the Ottoman Empire) is an extremely rare gemstone. Despite its beauty and suitability for jewelry there is scant availability. Like Tanzanite, Diaspore is only found in one location worldwide - the remote Turkey’s Anatolian Mountains at a height of over 4,000 feet, where it is still mined by hand with chisels and pick-axes.

Diaspore’s  rarity isn’t just dictated by its natural scarcity and remoteness, it tests the skills of experienced cutters. Like Diamonds, Diaspore can split apart in one direction due to its perfect cleavage, making it one of the most difficult gems to cut. It is also critical that the cutter correctly orients each crystal to accentuate Diaspore’s inherent color change. With up to 90% of the crystal lost during cutting, its very low yield is one of the reasons Diaspore is so rare, especially in larger sizes (over 5 carats). It’s hardness of 6.5-7 makes it suitable for most Jewelry applications.

Under a 10 x loupe the gem is classed as VVS2. There is no visible bamage to any of the facets. You can read more about Diaspore/Zultanite at
