Demantoid was only discovered in 1853 in Russia's central Ural Mountains. It has an unusual green color & quickly became a treasured and expensive gemstone. Its dispersion (0.057) is the highest of all gemstones (higher than diamond), and this is visible in demantoid's intense fire. It is classed as rare on gemological tables and is a collectors/investors gem.
Some Russian Demantoid contains fine feathery threads of Byssolite which resembles a horses tail. Unlike most inclusions which reduce the value of a gemstone, aesthetically pleasing horsetail inclusions substantially increase the value of a demantoid. It also unambiguously identifies the gem as a genuine Russian Demantoid.
Since 1999 very limited production has occurred and most mining is done secretively. Another find of demantoid was made in Namibia but the quality (and price/investment value) is FAR inferior to Russian Demantoid.
Most demantiod is small and under 1 Carat but can still sell for multiple thousands of dollars.
Stones with more intense green coloration are more highly valued, but lighter stones display substantially more fire. The choice of stone color or fire can therefore be a matter of personal preference, with some preferring the more lively yellow-green stones.
This demantoid is a good yellow/green (not light) and is classed as AAA colour (Can't get better for yellow/green). The blue and orange "dots" in the picture are dispersion flashes picked up by the camera. As the gem is turned there are multiple dispersion flashes and it will make an eyectaching piece of Jewelry.
I have appraised the gem at R4,000 for on line/internet shops. My supplier (an international AIG qualified gemologist) suggests a retail price of $900 (approx R6,500)
