Moldavite is one of the rarest varieties of Tektite – an olive-green or dull greenish glass meteorite.
Moldavite is believed to have been created by a large meteorite which vaporized when it struck the earth in Nordlingen, Germany, creating the Reis Crater, approximately 14.8 million years ago. This created a strewn field of green tektite in the Moldau River Valley north of Prague, Czech Republic. Thus the name Moldavite.The total amount of Moldavite scattered is estimated at 275 tons. It is predicted that in less than 9 years from now commercial Moldavite mining will come to an end with no appreciable amount of Moldavite left in the ground.
There are two grades of moldavite, high quality, and regular grade. You can tell them apart by the way they look - the regular grade pieces are usually a duller olive green, are more opaque and have more bubbles. The high quality is much more translucent. There is a big difference in the price between the two and Moldavite of good quality fetches very high prices.
