When light strikes Rainbow Mystic coated gems, multi colors bounce back in a rainbow effect. If you have never experienced these gems before, once you hold one in your hands you will be a convert! One amazing thing about mystic coated gems is that the pavilion (the back facets) usually have a sheen quite unlike the table (the front/top face) - I have included a picture to show this effect. The process involves heat and pressure so the coating is ¿baked¿ from 1 ¿ 2mm into the surface of the gem. So with normal wear (Quartz has a hardness of 7 ), the coating will not rub off.
The Concave Cut is a three dimensional conical shaped facet applied to the pavilion of the gem that creates depth as well as length and breadth. Instead of the facets being joined by an angle, they are joined with a groove. (see picture on the right) This third dimension allows the gem to refract more light, thereby maximizing its brilliance. It also distributes light more evenly, giving the gem a stunning interior glow. Some gems increase up to 100% in brilliance when Concave Cut
Concave Cut gems are gererally more expensive than traditionally cut gems. This is due to the following:
1) Higher weight loss (i.e. you get less carat weight from the raw material)
2) The additional labour required (It takes longer to facet concave cut than traditionally cut gems)
3) The market realities of supply and demand ( a lot of people want concave cut gems and the supply is limited)
