Sphalerite is highly prized as a gemstone because it has 3 x the dispersive power of diamond. i.e. It brings to the table (front) of the gem a fire greater than diamond as well as unique color shades.
So this striking gem sparkles even better than diamond. Over and above this it is Brilliant Red, orange or yellow.
Larger gem quality specimens are extra rare as most cuttable crystals are small. Collectors pay a premium for gems over 1 Ct. .
Sphalerite is often flawed and/or included and suitable gems are in big demand. Good quality gems are classified as rare collectors pieces. The actual gem is MUCH MUCH better than the pictures.
Sphalerite has a hardness of 5 and should only be used in a brooch or pendant.
