Sphene is highly prized as a gemstone because its exceptional dispersive power EXCEEDS that of diamond. i.e. It brings to the table (front) of the gem a fire greater than diamond as well as unique color shades.
So this striking gem sparkles even better than diamond. Over and above this it has flashes of Brilliant Red and Yellow as the gem is turned. These dispersion flashes are just hinted at in still pictures - they are dazzling.
Transparent specimens are noted for their strong trichroism, the three colours presented. These colours arise from trace impurities of iron and aluminium as well as rare earth metals including cerium and yttrium.
Sphene is often flawed and/or included and suitable gems are in big demand. Good quality gems are classified as rare collectors pieces. This is an SI2 gem
Sphene has a hardness of 6 and is brittle and is therefore only suitable in a ring if it is in a well protected setting.
