Royal Kashmir Blue Sapphire colour Kyanite.

This Kyanite is classed as VS2 with no damage to any of the facets even under magnification. As with most Kyanite, you will see some colour banding in some lighting conditions and angles. This is because of the natural crystal formation of the gem. In this picture you can see it in the right hand edge near the girdle.

Kyanite derives from the Greek word kyanos, meaning blue.

Kyanite has a unique characteristic in that it has a wide variation in hardness, in the same crystal. The hardness of kyanite is approximately 4.5 when scratched parallel to the long axis of the crystal and approximately 6.5 when scratched perpendicular to or across the long axis.

Gem quality Kyanite is an attractive mineral that has a brilliant Royal Blue sapphire colour. Kyanite gems have a relatively low hardness and the well developed cleavage make it comparatively easy to damage. It is a collectors gem and its use as a gemstone in Jewelry is generally limited to earrings, brooches and pendants.
