• Emerald (green beryl) is one of the most highly prized of all gems and good quality gems are extremely difficult to source. A flawless, clear emerald is very rare and is usually found only in very small sizes.

  Nearly all pictures of emerald do not do justice to the gem (as is the case here). In 99.9 % of the cases, the actual gem is FAR more beautiful than the pictures capture.

  The name Emerald is from the Greek "smaragdos" (green stone), to Middle English "esmeralde." Good quality emerald has the color of fresh young green grass. Its green coloring is due to microscopic traces of chromium or vanadium replacing the aluminum in the beryl structure

  Almost no emeralds with intense color are free from inclusions. This does not reduce the value of the emerald as long as they do not take away from the durability or beauty of the stone. In fact, unlike many gems where inclusions reduce gem value, inclusions in Emerald (and Ruby) are seen as "fingerprints" that prove their authenticity and enhance their unique beauty and value.

  Techniques to enhance color and reduce the visibility of flaws are a common practice. Oiling is one of these  it replaces the air in any flaws with oil that has a refractive index much closer to the beryl structure. These gems are classed as good grass green in colour and VS to I in clarity. A certificate of authenticity from an independant GIA qualified gemmologist can be arranged at R100 per lot.

  Please note that these are small accent gems normally used to highlight larger gems. However in a band or cluster of their own, they will make stunning Jewelry on their own. I have appraised these lots at $300 each for on-line/web based shops - retail is usually at least 40% more. The pictures are of the actual 7.07 Ct lot from which the 2 parcels are taken. The emeralds vary in size.
