For those not used to buying sapphires on line, here are a few pointers.Avoid buying dark blue sapphires. Most of them are all but black. Pictures of dark blue sapphires are taken under the brightest of lights but in normal daylight and evening light you are almost bound to be disappointed in a dull dark gem.
It is estimated that over 90% of sapphires on the market are heated to improve colour and saturation. However a lot depends on the original quality of the gem. Many heated sapphires have some colour banding. Look carefully at pictures. However, pictures can be taken that do not show this banding. If in doubt - ask the seller a question.
Poorly cut/poor quality sapphires have windows (pale patches) or dull spots. Again, pictures can be taken that do not show these. So if you are looking for a quality sapphire - ask a question first rather than spend good money on a disappointing gem - and then have to fight for your money back.
