Iolite is a popular and interesting violet blue gemstone, with an attractive and unique colour that is unlike other gemstones. It is sometimes known as "water sapphire". The name iolite comes from the Greek ios, which means violet.

When the Viking explorers ventured far out into the Atlantic Ocean, away from any coastline that could help them determine position, they had a secret gem navigation aid: iolite. The Viking mariners used thin pieces of iolite as the world's first polarizing filter. Looking through an iolite lens, they could determine the exact position of the sun, and navigate safely to the new world and back.

It is a difficult gem for a gem cutter to facet. If iolite is not cut from exactly the right direction, no matter the shape of the rough, its color will not show to its best advantage.

With a hardness of 7 – 7.5 , Iolite makes stunning violet jewelry. This gem is well cut and polished and classed as VVS1. Under 10 x magnification there is no damage to any of the facets.
