Conroy, Minister of Lands, addressed a public meeting at Kakamas and, according to a report in Die Suiderstem of 20 August, made the following statements, among others: "...one of the biggest injustices that has ever been committed is that the Church, under the guise of uplifting work, makes huge profits from the less fortunate."
