Offered for sale is a fine large Kalahari ceramic wall charger decorated with a San Bushman inspired motif of hunters and antelope, inspired by traditional Bushman rock art/cave painting . This decorative motif was popular in the 1950’s and used by Drosty and Kalahari ceramic studios. This item is entirely hand made from red bodied earthenware glazed in enamels. The design, manufacture and decoration/hand painting is by husband and wife team Aleksanders and Elma Klopkanov, expatriate Latvians who emigrated to South Africa in the late 1940's. This piece was made at their Cape Town studio in Constantia Neck. The plate is the size of an average dinner plate,slightly convex in shape and hand painted . The decorative motif of a hunter with bow and arrows and antelope is highlighted with a slip trail border and slightly raised in low relief from the surface of the plate . The base colour front and back is a matt black with the decorative elements highlighted in vibrant colours yellow ,kingfisher, blue ,brown. Kalahari ceramics are keenly collected world wide and much admired for their fine craftsmanship and unique design which amalgamated modernists ceramic design trends in the elegant shapes with a uniquely romantic interpretation of iconic South African native subjects, fauna ,flora and iconography unique to South Africa.
