Offered for sale is a rare and unusual Kalahari studio ceramic tile , of square format , hand painted and glazed with a bold abstract motif in an unusual colour combination of rose madder pink, peach ,aubergine/ox blood red,teal green , opaque white and black . The tile is in good condition and is signed on the back.
Kalahari ceramics were designed and made by Latvian expatriates Aleksanders and Elma Klopkanov who emmigrated to South Africa in the late 1940's. Their studio was based in Constantia Hoek Cape Town. Kalahari ceramics are hard to come by and keenly collected internationally. The exceptional quality of the craftsmanship and design of the pieces is widely acknowledged by collectors.
