Offered for sale is a rare and fine small Kalahari wall plate with a beautiful hand painted motif of a Xhosa woman with an elaborate headress. This is an entirely hand made item, hand thrown from red bodied earthenware and hand painted with onglaze enamels. The Kalahari ceramic studio was run by a talent husband and wife team Aleksanders and Elma Klopkanov, expatriate Latvians who emmigrated to South Africa in the late 1940's. They established a ceramic studio in Constantia Hoek Cape Town where they produced fine functional and decorative ceramic pieces which were exported and exhibited in the UK and USA achieving acclaim and accreditation. These pieces are now keenly sought after and rare collectors items; most were produced in the 1950's. This piece is signed with the hand painted studio name Kalahari, as well as an imprinted mark . The platter is slightly convex in shape with a round flat footring and a piercing for wire or string to suspend the plate
