Negoro refers to simple and elegant red lacquer objects produced in Japan. Since early 20th century Negoro wares have become highly sought after as objects of elegant design. The sap of the Japanese sumac mixed with cinnabar pigment was used to produce the red lacquered objects, red being considered a sacred colour in Japan, used for shrines and temples as well as sacred offering vessels.
