About the author:
D.H. Lawrence (1885 to 1930)
Born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, England, the son of a coal miner and a schoolteacher, D.H. Lawrence rose from working-class roots to become one of the most controversial and visionary writers of the 20th century. Plagued by ill health, he lived nomadically in Europe, Australia, Mexico, and New Mexico, constantly searching for a more authentic, instinctive way of life.
Lawrence revolutionised the modern novel with his raw emotional intensity, sensual prose, and fearless exploration of sexuality, class, industrialisation, and the relationship between men and women. He believed modern civilisation had cut people off from their vital instincts and sought to reconnect body, mind, and spirit. His writing is often lyrical, prophetic, and deeply psychological.
Influenced by: Thomas Hardy (rural realism and class conflict), Friedrich Nietzsche (vitalism and critique of Christian morality), Walt Whitman (celebration of the body), and the English Romantics, especially William Blake.
Who he influenced: Henry Miller, Anaïs Nin, Norman Mailer, Philip Roth, Ted Hughes, and countless writers of the post-war period who explored sexuality, identity, and primal energy. His impact on discussions of gender, the body, and anti-industrial feeling remains powerful (though often debated).
Major works include:
Lawrence remains a fiery, flawed, and essential figure a writer who challenged social norms with passionate honesty and poetic power. His work still provokes strong reactions and rewards readers who appreciate fiction that engages deeply with the physical and emotional realities of life.
