Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 1997
Bottle size 750ml
South Africa, Stellenbosch
"I much preferred the Cabernet Sauvignon 1997 cassis, violets, a certain leafiness plus sea breeze and the vaguest hint of undergrowth on the nose while the palate appears lean in the best way (alcohol: 13.5%) with pure fruit and fresh acidity, the tannins still grippy. Supremely elegant, I rated this 94/100." Christian Eedes, 7 November 2019
Renowned for decades of ageing, Kanonkop's Cabernet Sauvignon is austere when young and ages with grace.
Kanonkop is a fourth-generation family estate located on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch. With vineyards over 60 years old, award-winning winemakers and a dedication to tradition, Kanonkop has firmly established themselves as one of South Africa's 'First Growth' properties. Their wines are known to last for decades and, in many ways, Kanonkop is the embodiment of South African Pinotage.
Of all the very fine red wines made in Stellenbosch and elsewhere in the Cape today, the name Kanonkop is consistently among those at the top of the lists compiled by critics, judges, collectors, and buyers. The purity, finesse, and structure of Kanonkop's wines are well documented and consistently accrue the judges' trophies, 95+ point ratings or five-star accolades. If, however, there are two characteristics that stand out and allow Kanonkop to command its status as South Africa's First Growth, they are consistency and a sense of place.
