This book reports on a long stay in Berlin during 2008 that was followed up with shorter visits in 2010 and 2011. Apart from information on the new, rebuilt and united Berlin after the fall of the Wall in 1989, the book also gives valuable information on the history of the city. This history is closely associated with the development of the Prussian state, the Great War, the Weimar Republic, the rise of Nazism, the concentration camps close to the city and the atrocities of the World War II. Schoeman pays special attention to the flourishing of cabaret and film in the period between the world wars and to the divided city after World War II. According to Schoeman, the city always had a fragmented character, consisting of separate parts put together rather than being an organic whole. But due to this fragmented nature, Berlin is also multi-faceted and richly nuanced; an interesting, exciting and stimulating city.
