Description: Kashmiri Papier-Mâché Box.

Kashmiri Papier Mache is a traditional handicraft from the Kashmir region of India or Pakistan.

Handcrafted by skilled artisans in Kashmir, a region known for this specific craft which was introduced from Central Asia in the 15th century. The creation process involves using a pulp made from recycled paper and other natural materials, which is then dried and hand painted. The style is known as Kashmiri lacquerware or papier-mâché, often featuring intricate floral motifs in vibrant colours with gold accents on a dark lacquered surface, as seen in your image. The specific pattern, featuring dense flowers and leaves, may be referred to as the "Hazara" (thousand flowers) style.

The Traditional way of making Kashmiri Papier Mache which is a delicate and labour-intensive handicraft introduced from Persia in the 14th century.

The process is divided into two main stages:

Step 1: Sakhtsazi (Making the object). The base form is created using recycled waste paper, cloth, and rice straw. 1.The waste materials are soaked in water for several days until they disintegrate into a pulp. 2.The pulp is then mixed with a natural adhesive (like rice-based glue) and shaped around a mold (traditionally clay or wood).3. Once the pulp has dried, it is cut from the mold in two halves and glued back together. 4. The surface is coated with a mixture of glue and gypsum, smoothed using a polishing stone or a piece of baked brick, and covered with thin layers of tissue paper to prevent cracking and ensure a smooth finish. This step makes the item light yet strong.

Step 2: Naqashi (Painting the surface). This stage involves the intricate decoration of the smoothed object.
1. A base coat of paint is applied to the surface. 2. Skilled artisans then draw intricate floral and arabesque designs freehand using fine brushes. Common motifs include the "Hazara" (thousand flowers) pattern seen on your box. 3. Vibrant colours, often incorporating gold or silver highlights, are used to fill in the designs. 4. Finally, several coats of clear lacquer or varnish are applied to give the box a high-gloss finish, which protects the artwork and adds durability.

Made in India, a traditional handicraft from the Kashmir Valley.
