An investment piece, part of the Michaelis Portfolio Collection of 1952. This particular lithograph was limited to 66 and this is number 48. Number 49 is reproduced on page 208 in the important reference work Art and Artists of South Africa by Esme Berman, along with a large entry on this artist.
This artist is best known for her graphic work and skill in portraiture. Lithographs like these are very rare.
She studied in Berlin under Robert Erdmann and Ferdinand Spiegel and was a senior lecturer at the Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town where she taught etching and lithography. . Illustrated a large number of Afrikaans books and magazines.
Esme Berman writes:
"Her works, like herself, were unpretentious; their strength was in the absolute command of the medium and in her psychological penetration of the nature of the subject - be it portrait-study or book-illustration".
