Hardy, evergreen, fast growing, drought resistant, large, shrub or small tree. Long spines make it an excellent addition to a security hedge. It has small, creamy-green, nectar laden flowers that appear in mid summer. The plum-like, yellow fruits rich in vitamin C are edible, refreshing and make a delicious jelly preserve. They are also much sought after by birds.

 Plant in sun or semi-shade. Male and female flowers on separate plants, therefore only female plants will bear fruit. Size 3 to 5m.

Sowing : Sow seeds in springtime. They should then be sown in seedling trays filled with river sand or seedling mix. The seeds must be pressed down into the sand until they are level with the surface of the sand and then covered with a layer of fine sand.
