The song was released as a digital download in the United States on August 25, 2003 by Star Trak and Arista Records. It was written and produced by The Neptunes, a production duo that had produced the majority of Kelis' songs in the past. Lyrically, the song speaks of a "milkshake", which describes what makes a woman special.
The song received generally positive reviews from critics. It has sold 883,000 digital copies in the United States, and peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming Kelis' best charting single to date.
