Offered for sale is a small oil on board by acclaimed Cape Town Coloured artist Kenneth Baker 1931-1996. The subject is a harbour village scene with fishing boats , yachts, a wooden jetty and typically cape vernacular whitewashed cottages. A figure in the foreground in a peaked cap is possibly a ships captain holding a lantern or a pail. The work is signed bottom left in large bold black script. The style is representational and impressionistic with vigorous and energetic brushwork ,vibrant colour , and a faux naive approach with simplified forms and a paring down of detail to the essential narrative. Baker is particularly celebrated for his depictions of urban life and the working class in the Bo Kaap, District Six and the Cape Flats. He was a self taught artist who took inspiration from the work of Gregoire Boonzaaier in style and subject matter.
Size is 26.5cm x 28.5cm including a slim anodised gilt metal frame.
