Kewa salsoloides Seeds
South African Indigenous Edible Succulent
Kewa is a genus of flowering plants, consisting of eight species of succulent sub-woody plants, native to eastern and southern Africa, including Saint Helena and Madagascar. These are small shrubs or herbs that form cushions and have edible, acid-tasting leaves. Kewa is the only genus in the family Kewaceae. Plants are perennial but relatively short lived. They can easily be propagated from seed and make attractive cushion-like shrubs with leathery leaves and many starry white flowers. Kewa salsoloides, synonymously known as Hypertelis salsoloides, Hypertelis verrucosa, Pharnaceum salsoloides or Pharnaceum verrucosum and commonly known as Blaassuring, Braksuring, Haassuring, Skaapsuring or Volstruisbrak, is a widespread South African indigenous species found in the Eastern Cape, Free State, Limpopo, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape Provinces. The plant branches, spreading from a single stem, to reach 30cm tall. It has succulent, blue-green leaves. The leaves are erect, cylindrical and smooth or hairless, feeling rubbery to the touch. They become 3.5 cm long.
