Form: Six pointed Star with a ball at each point. Ribbon red white and blue with orange left and black right Plain upper suspension bar with brooch pin
Obverse: Central medallion made separately and bonded to the star , the Kimberley coat of arms 'SPERO MELIORA'

Reverse: Across 'MAYOR'S SIEGE MEDAL 1900' : Stamped below with the Birmingham maker's hallmarks for 1900-01 (a) in this case ---- other one is 1901-2 (b)Below that the abbreviated maker's mark 'AHD'
Notes: The medal was commisioned by the Mayor of Kimberley, Mr H.A.Oliver , for issue to those who had participated in the defense of the town. An initial 2000 medals were presented at a ceremony on 15 April 1901 and a further 2000 medals were presented later to other men not initially present.
This particular medal was presented to a certain John Lillis who died of dysentery during the siege and was accepted by his brother . This brother later opened a bottle store in Oudtshoorn.
