William IV was born on 21 August 1765, and ascended the throne on his eldest brother¿s death. From c. 1791 to 1811 while Duke of Clarence, he was cohabiting with the actress Dorothea Jordan who bore him ten illegitimate children.
After the death of George IV¿s daughter, William was forced into a legitimate marriage with Adelaide (after which the South African town was named) of Saxe-Coburg and Meinigen. She bore him two daughters who both died in childhood.
His reign was notable for the introduction of the Reform bill and abolition of slavery. William was the last King of the Hanover line, and died on 20 June 1837 when the throne passed to his niece, Victoria.
