Riana se doktorale proefskrif het gehandel oor Koos Prinsloo en sy geskryfdes. Dit het haar drie jaar geneem om Koos Prinsloo: die skrywer en sy geskryfdes in 1999 te voltooi. Prinsloo word deur Riana beskou as die skrywer oor wie die meeste gepraat is. Hy was radikaal, vreesloos, fassinerend en aan die voorpunt van alles wat in Afrikaans gebeur het. Hulle het reeds op skool (in graad tien) teenoor mekaar te staan gekom op ’n debatsaand toe Riana die wesenlikheid van sensuur moes verdedig en Koos die teenoorgestelde. Hulle het lank hierna nog gekorrespondeer.
