Short Description
Original United Nations blood chit used during the Korean War, mounted and framed, featuring multi-language text and Allied flags.
Description
This item is a United Nationsissue blood chit, a type of escape and evasion notice carried by Allied aircrew during the Korean War. Blood chits were intended to be shown to local civilians if an airman was shot down, requesting assistance in returning safely to Allied or UN forces. In return for this help, a reward from the bearers government was promised.
The document displays several Allied flags at the top, including:
United States (top left)
United Nations (top right)
United Kingdom (bottom left)
South Korea (bottom right)
Below the flags, the message is printed in multiple languages common to the Korean War theatre, including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese, with an English translation at the bottom. The English text reads in part:
I am an American (UNITED NATIONS) flier. My plane has been shot down and I am helpless If you will help me and yourselves by getting me to the nearest American unit, my Government will reward you.
Blood chits of this type were issued between 1951 and 1953 and were often produced locally in Korea or Japan for UN forces operating in the region. These items are today regarded as significant and collectible artefacts from the Korean War, valued for both their historical importance and their striking visual design.
