Can any of us make a difference to the great events which determine our fate?  La doubts it, but when she moves from London into the Suffolk countryside on the eve of the Second World War, she gets her chance to be more than a mere spectator.  Her move to the country has taken place in the trying circumstances of a failed marriage - now she hopes that rural life will offer her peace and the opportunity to recover.

But the war brings people together in unexpected ways.  A new friend encourages her to form an amateur orchestra, which includes musicians from the village as well as men from the air base nearby.  One of the people she recruits is Feliks, a handsome but enigmatic refugee from Poland, who can play the flute.  And so, a tender friendship begins to blossom.

Hard cover, with dust jacket, in excellent condition.
