New songs for her new album Artpop (stylized as ARTPOP) were "beginning to flourish" as she worked with producer Fernando Garibay in early 2012. "Applause" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, from her upcoming third studio album, Artpop (2013). Written and produced by Lady Gaga and DJ White Shadow, the song was released on August 12, 2013. Originally intended for a release through mainstream and rhythmic airplay on August 19, 2013, it was rush-released a week earlier after two snippets of the song were leaked online on August 10. A mix of electropop and Eurodance evocative of Gaga's first studio album The Fame, the song deals with how she is dependent on her fans' adoration, while her vocals on the track have been compared by music critics to those of Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics and David Bowie. The song received generally positive reviews. "Applause" became Gaga's 12th non-consecutive top-ten single in the United States, peaking at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song peaked at #1 in Lebanon, Spain and South Korea and within the Top 5 of the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Finland, Germany and Italy.
