Lady's Mantle is a perennial plant that occurs throughout Europe and is easily recognizable by its large fan-shaped leaves, made up of 8 to 10 serrated lobes. It bears clusters of little, green flowers and its yellow fruit contains one seed. Lady's mantle's genus name Alchemilla means alchemy and stems from the medieval alchemists' fascination with the plant. They collected the dew from the concave leaves, believing it to have magical powers. Lady's mantle leaves are said to resemble the Virgin Mary's cloak and it also has an affinity for the female reproductive tract so it is aptly named.
Due to its tannin content, lady's mantle has astringent and coagulant properties, and is therefore able to tighten the tissues and stop bleeding. Traditionally lady's mantle has been used in compresses to be placed over wounds in order to accelerate healing. When taken internally, lady's mantle is a valuable herb for treating excessive or irregular menstrual bleeding. A strong infusion taken also treats mild diarrhoea. When applied externally, the plant helps to relieve itching and inflammation and is used to treat skin infections, gingivitis, insect bites and ailments effecting the vulva, such as itching and vaginal discharge (via a sitz bath).
