Lammas is the first of August harvest festival. Ian Duhig's poem uses some older dialect words to portray a farmer hiring a worker at a fair. After that everything goes badly wrong for the farmer. The title poem won the first prize in the Poetry Society's National Poetry Competition in 2000.
