There are many books available on basic ecology as well as on environmental management. This book however is the only one in southern Africa that integrates natural laws and ecological principles with local land use issues. It addresses many relevant environmental land use issues in an outcomes based, educationally sound, and nontechnical approach. It explains, in a pragmatic way, how the resource base can be utilized in a profitable yet sustainable way.

AIM

It is envisaged that, by reading this book, learners as well as everyone concerned with the environment, will receive the capacity, as well as the passion, by means of basic knowledge and understanding, to protect their natural resources for the sake of their own future.

MOTIVATION

As the current generation may feel that the previous older generation is handing down a death-sentence to us due to their own irresponsible selfish lifestyle, we may feel helpless to face the future. As Greta Thunberg, the youthful activist, cried out at a world leaders conference:

We will never forgive you!

But our message is rather one of hope. It is a message that envisages restoration and one that begs for energetic action and initiative. By instilling in people the understanding of how Nature functions as an integrated system of which we are a part of (and not a foreign exotic parasite); and by empowering all of us to be effective agents to recover wat seems to be lost, we believe this negative perception will shift and we all can look forward to a hopeful future.
