Book in very good condition. >>> Mandla Langa is not someone who shirks the difficulties of writing about the liberation struggle in the form of a novel. He presents the story as a report from Chaplain Nerissa Rodriques to the President on a series of events in KwaDambuza as 1989 changed into 1990. He presents us with a series of characters who are trying either to ensure that some important information gets into the hands of the liberation movement, or to make sure that it doesn't so that people can remain in positions of influence in the new dispensation. Langa does not shrink from describing the horrors of necklacing. He does not make the mistake of presenting people as villains, although some of them on both sides have clearly become such. He presents ordinary people, many of whom have been damaged in some way through the struggle, and who become even more damaged through the events described in the book. This is not a gung-ho adventure story where it is clear who is on the side of the angels. It is an enormously complex story, with many uncertainties, many betrayals and many hopes for the future. It is a story about the formation of a new country from the damaged reality that was inherited. * Politics * Apartheid *
