ON AUCTION IS A LARGE "HIPPO" TOOTH. ITS 18CM LONG AND APPEARS TO BE ONE OF THE UPPER CANINE TEETH OF A HIPPO. IT IS OLD AND CAN BE SEEN BY THE WHITE GLUE VISIBLE NEAR OPEN END WHERE IT HAVE BEEN MOUNTED BEFORE.
The large canine teeth (tusks) of the herbivorous hippopotamus is used for fighting, not eating. Hippos have the biggest canine teeth of any land mammal, which grow continuously and is used to defend against threats.
Hippopotamuses have 36 teeth, consisting of 8 incisors, 4 canines, 12 premolars, and 12 molars. Some hippos, however, may have more teeth than usual because some of their supposedly temporary teeth are retained throughout their adult lives. Their flat-ridged molars and premolars are used to grind and crush their food.
Hippo upper canine teeth (tusks) typically grow up to about 25 cm long, with the lower canines often growing longer and sharper, reaching up to 50 cm.The lower and upper canines rub against each other, sharpening them.
