1920s Solid Silver 'Art Deco' Mesh Evening Bag (510g) 

This wonderful, large, heavy solid silver 1920's evening bag or purse is beautifully made, featuring a lovely tassel fringe detail along the bottom and across the front in a zig zag, which catches the light with movement. It has a wide, solid silver frame with beautiful floral embossed detail along the front and a rounded, sold double handle with a 'kiss-clasp' at the top. It was probably made in Germany or Austria due to the purity of silver and is stamped '800' (purity 800/1000), 'PATENT' and 'MH' for the makers, on the handle. This is the biggest, heaviest and most attractive solid silver mesh bag I've come across in forty years of trading, but unfortunately it has a few small holes in the mesh and the one arm of the handle, although attached to the hinge, has separated from the frame, which is not easily noticed. This only affects, the opening of the purse using the handle, otherwise it can be opened manually, and being solid silver, I'm sure it could be repaired by a jeweller. Other than these small faults the evening bag is in great condition, and they don't affect the appearance, beauty and use. The bag measures 33cm from top of handle to the lower frill, 19cm across and weighs a heavy 510g.
