EMPOLI GLASS:
Empoli, as a municipality itself, is approx 30kms (45 mins) slightly south-west of Florence, in the region of Tuscany, Italy. Its the somewhat forgotten region of the country when it comes to glass manufacturing, behind the well-known Murano or Venetian glass.
Glass making in the Empoli region of Italy actually has a history which dates to the 1500s, when local glass production was known as verde (Italian for green). The traditional verde glass in Emerald or Olive Green was created for a number of both functional and decorative pieces during its long history.
However, during the peak post-war period, decorative items produced in Empoli and the surrounding region were manufactured at an all-time high, bound for western international markets. Empoli glass manufacturers moved away from the traditional green "Verde" glassware, and began producing brightly coloured glass sometimes cased glass in another layer of clear glass. Across the peak of the 1950s through the early 1970s, decorative decanters, vessels, vases and the like were exported and sold at various department stores in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, etc.
Catalogues for department stores and home styling magazines of the era can be found today online showcasing decorative Italian decanters and vases, for the most part originating from the Empoli region. Whilst some Empoli company names are known, many are and remain unkown. Some of the importers/exporters of Empoli glass names are sometimes seen on paper/foil labels but is rarely still intact on pieces.

BRANDY SNIFTER SHAPE:
To some, the bulbous stemware with short stems might seem overly sophisticated. First is their round, bulbous body. Never filled up fully, the rounded glass provides your craft spirit a larger surface area. All that space gives your favorite meticulously crafted spirit room to breathe. And that does wonders for your craft spirits aromatics, allowing the perfumes to mingle in the bulb-like glass. Another trademark feature of the snifter is its smaller, narrower opening. The snifters tighter opening helps concentrate all of the delicate aromas that have been brewing inside the rounded glass. Without the glasss narrow mouth, the build up of marvelous perfumes would just escape the glass. The short stems force the user to insert the stem between two fingers and cup the bowl with the palm of the hand, warming the spirit. Aromas evaporate as a spirit warms because heat increases molecular movement causing molecules to break the liquid surface tension and enter the atmosphere.
