LARGE 38.7CT LAB CREATED OR LAB TREATED RUBY GEMSTONE WITH BEAUTIFUL OVAL CUT DIFFUSED RUBY
AN BEAUTIFUL LARGE 38.7 LAB CREATED AND OR TREATED RUBY GEMSTONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL OVAL CUT. COMES WITH A BEAUTIFUL PERSPEX PRESENTATION CASE AND VELVET BAG.
THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT FROM A SELLER IN THAILAND.IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS AN DIFFUSED LAB TREATED GEMSTONE WHICH MEANS THE COLOR OF WHITE RUBY WAS ENHANCED BY DIFFUSION (a technique whereby certain natural elements, those used in nature when colouring allochromatic gems, are placed on the surface of the gem during the heating and or growth process and the colour is diffused into the gem).
OUR RUBY SCRATCHED GLASS BUT DID NOT LEAVE A RED STREAK. I ALSO COULD NOT SCRATCH THE RUBY WITH A COIN AND STEEL WIRE. IT GUARANTEES IT IS NOT A FAKE LIKE COLOURED GLASS. SEE SCRATCH TESTS BELOW.
REAL RUBIES; LAB-GROWN OR TREATED RUBIES; SYNTHETIC OR FAKE RUBIES?
Firstly Rubies is one of the four precious gemstones amongst Saphire, Diamond and Emerald. Real rubies rank 9 on the Mohs scale of Hardness. Only a diamond can scratch real rubies. Glass (a common material in faux rubies) is a mere 5.5 on the hardness scale. Rubies are basicly the mineral Corundum and Aluminium Oxide with chemical formula Al2O3. Ruby is a red type of the corundum mineral, along with sapphire. Sapphires have each color of the corundum, except red, which is the color of the ruby. Corundum is relatively common in nature, and is completely colourless. Small amounts of metallic elements such as Cr, Fe and Ti can substitute for aluminum in the structure, which gives rise to many colour variations. Chromium causes the red colour in rubies. Corundum once found wide application as an industrial abrasive like sandpaper. Gem corundum is mined almost exclusively from gem gravel deposits. Historically, the most famous and prolific production has been from Myanmar ( Burma), Thailand, India and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Rubies are known as the King of Gemstones and Myanmar and Thailand honor the corundum ruby as their national stone. More recent important sources include East African countries of Madagascar, Tanzania and Mozambique. Corundum was the first gem mineral to be synthesized in the lab. Synthetic rubies and sapphires are presently manufactured in enormous quantities for both industrial and gem application. This caused widespread apprehension and greatly diminished ruby sales. Extensive British ruby and sapphire mining operations in southeast Asia, particularly in Burma, suffered greatly from the resulting fall in prices. The color and clarity of rubies and sapphires is commonly enhanced by heat treatment and, less frequently, by diffusion. Although not commonly disclosed by retailers, such processes are widely acknowledged within the industry and are probably today the rule rather than the exception. Reliably distinguishing among treated, untreated, natural and synthetic ruby and sapphire depends critically on microscopic examination. However there are some tests that can be easily done to give and indication as to the realness of your Ruby.
THE RUBY SCRATCH TEST: If you are able to scratch the surface of the ruby in question with your nails or any other sharp instrument (coin, key, steel wire etc) that is not a diamond then you know it is a fake ruby. I TESTED OUR RUBY AND IT DID NOT SCRATCH.
THE RUB TEST: In this method, you are looking to see if your ruby leaves behind a color streak on glass. If a streak of red color is left behind, then it is clear that you have a fake ruby on your hands. A real ruby gem will never leave color in that way. This of cause does not guarantee you have a real ruby only that it is fake ruby if it does leave a streak. OUR RUBY MANAGED TO SCRATCH GLASS BUT DID NOT LEAVE ANY COLOR STREAKS.
CARAT SIZE: Real rubies are so rare and expensive that any ruby more than 1 carat in size is either lab grown or Lab treated or fake.
COMMON RUBY IMITATIONS Tourmaline and Garnets: Tourmaline and garnet stones are crystal silicates (hardness is rated 6,5-7.5 on the Mohs scale). The pinkish-red variety of these stone are frequently marketed as other gemstones, including genuine rubies, although it is considerably softer. Glass: Most fake rubies on the market consist of red-colored glass. These synthetic rubies of course can easily be scratched. Composite Rubies: These are natural rubies with red-colored glass fused into it. Mixing these two materials creates a larger, fake stone at a lower price. Composite rubies is that these stones contain glass and, thus, are easily fractured.
SIZE: 21.1 x 16.8 x 11.4mm
DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT. THESE GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. I HAVE TRIED TO VERIFY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE ANY STATEMENTS OR CLAIMS BY DOING SOME THOROUGH RESEARCH ON EACH GEMSTONE.
PLEASE ALSO SEE MY OTHER ITEMS LISTED. I HAVE SOME OTHER GEMSTONES ALSO ON AUCTION THIS WEEK.
