LARGE 38CM HIGH AND HEAVY 2,8KG (BASE METAL VALUE R300!) BRASS DRAGON ENGRAVED VASE WITH FAKE MING DYNASTY MARK
A LARGE (38CM HIGH) AND HEAVY (2,8KG) CHINESE BRASS VASE.
ENGRAVED WITH A DRAGON MOTIF ON THE OUTSIDE.
AT CURRENT COPPER AND ZINC PRICES (BRASS IS 60% COPPER 40% ZINC) THE BASE METAL VALUE OF THIS VASE ALONE IS AROUND R300!
ON BOTTOM IS AN FAKE EMPRESSED 6 SYMBOL MARK OF WHICH THE FIRST TWO CLEARLY INDICATES DA (STICK MAN SYMBOL) MING (DOUBLE B SYMBOL)
EVEN THOUGH THIS VASE HAS A FAKE MING DYNASTY MARK IT IS STILL INTERESTING TO NOTE SOME WEB INFO REGARDING THIS PRACTISE. The Great Ming Dynasty ruled China from the mid-fourteenth to the mid-seventeenth century for 276 years (13681644).
Reign marks follow a set format, and a six-character mark can be broken down as follows: the first two characters refer to the dynasty, and are either Da Ming meaning Great Ming dynasty (1368-1644), or Da Qing, translated as Great Qing dynasty (1644-1911); the second two characters refer to the name of the Emperor; and the last two characters, Nian Zhi, mean made for. Four-character reign marks simply omit the first two characters recording the name of the dynasty.
A LATER COPIED MARK IN REVERENCE OR AN OUTRIGHT FAKE? For hundreds of years Chinese artisans copied reign marks from earlier dynasties out of a respect and reverence for these earlier periods. These marks were not necessarily intended to fool buyers into thinking they were buying a genuine earlier work of art. The Xuande (1426-1435) 5th Ming Dynasty emperor period is acknowledged as a high point in the production of bronze works of art, and the vast majority of later bronze censers made during the 17th and 18th centuries have Xuande marks to their bases. OUR VASE IS A MORE MODERN BRONZE VASE AND FALLS MORE INTO THE OUTRIGHT FAKE CATEGORY.
